Answers to common questions about BetterHalve. Can't find what you need — just email us.
Getting started
Go to Settings → your partner's section and tap "Invite partner". You'll get a 6-character code to share — it's valid for 48 hours. Your partner enters the code during onboarding or via Settings → Join a household.
You can create an account and set up your household on your own, but the app is designed for two people. Expenses, balances, and insights are all built around a shared household — they'll work best once your partner joins.
BetterHalve supports Google Sign-In and Sign in with Apple. No passwords to manage — just tap and go.
Expenses & splitting
When adding an expense, you choose who paid and how to split it. There are three options:
50/50 — equal split, the default.
Custom — enter a fixed amount for each person.
Percentage — split by percentage.
The running balance updates immediately for both of you.
Recurring expenses are bills or subscriptions that repeat automatically — weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. You set them up once in Settings → Recurring expenses and the app generates the expense for you on each due date.
They convert from your original currency at the live rate each time they're posted, so they stay accurate even if exchange rates shift.
Tap "Settle up" from the home screen or the + button. Enter the amount transferred and confirm. The balance updates instantly for both partners. Settlements appear in your activity feed alongside expenses.
Currencies & AI
BetterHalve supports 15 currencies: ZAR, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, JPY, CHF, HKD, SGD, NOK, SEK, DKK, NZD, and CNY.
Your household has one base currency, set in Settings. You can log any expense in any supported currency and it's converted to your household currency using live rates at the time of entry.
BetterHalve uses Google Gemini to power two features: automatic category prediction when you type an expense description, and monthly spending insights on the Insights tab.
Expense descriptions and spending summaries are sent to the Gemini API to generate these results. This data is handled according to Google's API terms and is not used to train models.
Go to Settings → Household currency. Note that changing the currency does not retroactively convert existing expenses — historical entries keep their stored amounts. Future expenses will be entered and displayed in the new currency.
Account & data
Go to Settings → Delete account. Deletion is immediate and permanent — your account and all associated data are removed. This cannot be undone.
If you'd prefer to request deletion by email, contact us at hello@lukeberetta.com.
When you join a partner's household, your existing expenses, settlements, and recurring expenses are merged into the shared household. If you delete your account, your data is permanently removed from our systems within 30 days.
Your data is stored in Google Firebase Firestore with encryption in transit and at rest. Access is restricted to you and your partner — no other users can see your expenses or balance.
